House Medicare Bill Has Deep Cuts

Earlier this month, I warned my Democrat colleagues that the $500 billion in Medicare cuts included in the House health care bill would reduce benefits for seniors.

Well I hate to say I told you so, but a new study by the Obama Administration is confirming my fears.  The study conducted by the chief actuary for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS), which is the federal agency that administers Medicare paints a grim picture for seniors.

The new report says that the $500 billion in Medicare cuts will sharply jeopardize their health care benefits.  The Washington Post reported that the Medicare cuts "are likely to prove so costly to hospitals and nursing homes that they could stop taking Medicare altogether."

The fact that an analysis done by the Obama administration shows deep cuts to Medicare should be of concern to every senior citizen in our country.  When you add in that the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office reached many of the same conclusions, it is painfully obvious that Congress needs to start over with a bill that does not savage health care for seniors.

I have the oldest congressional district in the country. You can rest assured I will not stand by while we devastate Medicare, one of the most important pillars of our nation's healthcare delivery system for senior citizens.

With the bill through the House I am now calling on the Senate to abandon efforts to cut Medicare and work towards a more balanced solution that does not reduce benefits for our seniors.

Today I ask you to tell your friends about this travesty and make sure to call your Senators and tell them to vote against any bill that cuts Medicare.

    Honorable Vern Buchanan,

I sent the following to our "Blue Dog" democrats and independents:
    (For your perusal.)
Please forward this to the "conservative" democrats and independents:

I have been closely following the issues regarding our national health care on CNN, MSNBC, ABC, BBC, CBS and FOX news.
Considering the varied opinions and arguments from the far left, through the center, to the far right, I have arrived at the following conclusions:

    1. "Pushing" a bill with thousands of pages and hundreds of "laws" through congress without serious study is a major mistake. This is especially true if this bill represents one-sixth of our economy. The reason? Passage as soon as possible would mean the timing would not coincide with our November elections. Make no mistake. The electorate will neither forget nor be cavalier!

    2. Back room deals and sweetheart packages only add to our lack of confidence and trust in our leadership. Nebraska, Vermont and Louisiana are just the "tip of the iceberg".

    3. The ridiculous assertion that this will lessen our health care burden is only justified by manipulative accounting procedures.

    4. Taxing our citizens for four years before any "benefits" would be given only adds credence to my statement in #3 above.

    5. At this time, 57% of the people are against this bill while only 37% are in favor. The arrogance of our majority party is only exceeded by their carelessness and lack of commitment to their constituents.

    6. Our founding fathers were careful and instilled a "balance of power" in the constitution. It seems they overlooked the remote chance one faction would retain control of the senate, the legislature and the executive branch. This makes it easy for this party to employ the nefarious activities which has led to this possible legislation. The "holier than thou" attitude is at best, condescending. I am among the majority of Americans. I take this personally.

I will continue to follow this issue as it passes through the house and senate joint committee. Hopefully, some law maker or lawmakers will come to his/her senses and decide to continue with a bill that makes sense. Hold down health care costs and don't raise taxes in a recession.

    Respectfully,

    Anthony P. Gallo

I'm glad you're fighting for Medicare. Yes it needs to evolve, i.e. implementing best practices procedures that work, eliminating fraud. If you eliminate the fraud, then the system is truly a good system respected by all.

I'm counting on your support and fight to allow seniors over 55 that have no health insurance to buy into the program with their own money.

Thanks for fighting for Medicare and the simple idea it represents; to enable seniors a chance to live with dignity without going bankrupt and homeless to pay medical bills.
